Thank you for your interest in the Orientation Leader (O'leader) position at LMU.

This is a paid, leadership opportunity for current LMU students to provide support for new, incoming students and their families. Additionally, O'leaders play a critical role in the behind-the scenes coordination of the Orientation events. In addition to the reward of helping new students successfully get started at LMU, you have the chance to expand your resume, work on a team of student leaders, and build strong leadership and communication skills.

O'leaders receive the following compensation and benefits:

  • Pay of $16.78 per hour
  • Early move-in (as available), for O'leaders living in LMU-owned housing.*
  • Selected meals during Orientation events.

The O'leader position is available to currently enrolled, undergraduate students only.

*Please note that your assigned room must be move-in ready in order for Student Housing to accommodate early move-in. Orientation Programs will make an official request with Housing, and Housing will communicate directly with you about your move-in date.

If you are not living in LMU Housing, you are responsible for arranging a move-in date on your lease that accommodates required on-campus work in August 2024. 

Before beginning your application, please carefully review the following expectations, responsibilities and key dates for O'leaders.   

  • Deadline Extended: Priority consideration will be given to applicants who submit the application no later than 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Interviews will take place weekdays of March 6–15, and candidates should sign up for an interview time as prompted upon completion of the application. 

  • Priority Consideration Deadline for Returning Staff: Applications must be completed and submitted online no later than 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2024. Interviews will take place on a rolling basis and returners should sign up for an interview time as prompted upon completion of the application.

    Returning O’leaders are also eligible to be considered for the Senior Orientation Leader opportunity, which involves additional managerial and peer leadership responsibilities throughout the summer in May, June, July, and August. All Senior O’leader training and responsibilities from May 6 to August 9, 2024, take place online; if interested, you will have an option to indicate your interest on the Orientation Leader application.

  • Orientation Leader responsibilities include: 

    • Completing online training modules in July/August 2024. 
    • Engaging and making conversation with new students and their families. 
    • Acting as a knowledgeable resources for new students and their families to help them connect with people, offices, and services that can assist them with their needs. 
    • Completing on-campus training for in-person activities to occur in Fall 2024. 
    • Preparing orientation materials for students and guests. (shifts assigned)
    • Facilitating and leading new student learning during selected activities and tours. 
    • Guiding student transitions from one Orientation activity to the next. 
    • Providing directions and answering questions for students and guests. 
    • Supporting program logistics, including but not limited to set-up and clean-up, Orientation check-in, meals, resources fairs, and social events. (shifts assigned)
    • Lifting boxes of orientation materials, large sign frames, and table cloths during event preparation, set-up, and clean-up. 
    • Staffing informational booths during Orientation events. (shifts assigned)
    • Representing Orientation in a professional manner to campus partners, students, parents, and other program guests.
    • Completing other duties as assigned by Orientation staff. 
  • Orientation Leaders are expected to:

    • Fulfill the responsibilities as outlines in the job description, Orientation Leader training, staff meetings, office emails, and other duties as assigned with a high level of professionalism.
    • Uphold, follow, and enforce state and federal laws, university policies, and regulations as described in LMU's Community Standards, HR policies, and federal and state policy. Official university conduct records are reviewed each semester. You are required to uphold these laws, policies, and conduct expectations during your employment as an Orientation Leader. This includes your actions both on and off-campus upon accepting the Orientation Leader position. 
    • Serve as a role model to incoming students and family members, with a commitment to upholding all university policies both on and off-campus. 
    • Remain in good academic standing with the university. Orientation Leaders must maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. Official GPA record are reviewed each semester.
    • Complete online O'leader training, attend pre-event team trainings, and work orientation events between July 8–August 25, 2024.
    • Attend work responsibilities as scheduled.
    • Students must actively communicate with their Orientation supervisor regarding any conflicts with Orientation responsibilities.
    • Wear the provided O'leader t-shirt, dark blue jeans, and name badge during all Orientation events and activities worked. The designated O'leader uniform necessitates wearing dark blue jeans during Orientation events.  O'leaders are expected to maintain a professional appearance at all times.
    • Submit accurate timecards by the set deadlines.
    • Maintain an active LMU email account and respond to emails from Orientation staff within 48 business hours.
    • Return any university-owned property utilized by employees to Orientation Programs in good condition and within the designated timeframe. 
  • During online summer training (July 8–August 9, 2024), O'leaders will complete online trainings, which usually involves 2-4 hours of work per week.

    Orientation Programs is requesting that student staff be allowed early access to campus for preparation and training in August 2024. 

    From August 13–20, 2024, O'leaders can expect to work approximately 25–40 hours. O'leaders should not make firm plans or commit to hours at another job during this time without consulting with their Orientation supervisor.

    During Orientation preparation and programming, taking place August 21–25, O'leaders can expect to work 30–40+ hours. We do try to give each O'leader one day off during this timeframe; however, the scheduled hours will vary greatly. Again, O'leaders should clearly communicate any potential conflicts to their supervisor. Unavailability on specific event dates may preclude an employee from meeting essential job requirements.
